In yogic tradition, Shiva is not regarded as a god but as the Adiyogi — literally "the first yogi" — and the Adiguru, the first Guru. According to yogic lore, over 15,000 years ago, Shiva attained full enlightenment and, in a state of intense ecstatic dance upon the Himalayas, transmitted the entire science of yoga to his seven disciples, the Saptarishis (seven sages). He expounded 112 ways through which a human being can transcend the limitations of their species and reach their ultimate potential — moksha (liberation). Sadhguru Jaggi Vasudev, founder of the Isha Foundation, frames Adiyogi not as a deity to be worshipped but as a human being who rose beyond all limitations. His core message is that "in is the only way out" — that individual inner transformation is the only path to transforming the world. The Adiyogi's offerings are tools for self-exploration, not religious doctrine. The Adiyogi Shiva bust at the Isha Yoga Center, located approximately 30 km west of Coimbatore, Tamil Nadu, at the foothills of the Velliangiri Mountains (often called the "Kailash of the South"), is a monumental steel bust designed by Sadhguru himself. Parameter Detail Height 34 m (112 ft) — symbolizing the 112 paths to liberation and the 112 chakras in the human system Length 45 m (147 ft) Width 25 m (82 ft) Every detail of the sculpture carries layered meaning: Closed eyes — meditative stillness and inward focus; transformation begins within Crescent moon on the head — the cyclical nature of time Serpent around the neck — awakened energy, associated with kundalini Large earrings — balance between masculine and feminine energies Thirunamam (sacred ash mark) on the forehead — a mark of yogic realization Calm facial expression — a state beyond duality, untouched by life's turbulence 621 tridents surrounding the sculpture — one of Shiva's most recognizable symbols, representing his power and role in maintaining cosmic balance Yogeshwara Linga — a smaller linga consecrated in front of the statue, embodying a concentrated symbolic form of the same spiritual essence The seven faces of Adiyogi are said to represent the seven dimensions of human consciousness. The project was conceived in 2014, following the unveiling of a smaller 6.4-metre (21 ft) prototype at the Isha Yoga Center on Guru Purnima that year. The design phase took approximately two years, and the massive 112-foot statue was manufactured in just eight months (2016). Construction involved rural blacksmiths and dedicated volunteers of the Isha Foundation. The statue was officially inaugurated on February 24, 2017, on the occasion of Maha Shivaratri, by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, alongside Sadhguru. The site is not a temple for worship but a consecrated energy space for meditation and inner well-being. Key experiences include: Adiyogi Divya Darshanam — a 3D laser and light show narrating the spiritual story of Adiyogi, typically held in the evening Yoga Sandhya — a daily morning practice combining breathwork, movement, and meditation Dhyanalinga — the energy-based meditation space at the center's heart, aligned to the seven chakras Adiyogi Alayam — a column-less, 82,000 sq ft meditation hall named after Adiyogi Visitors are encouraged to walk around the statue from different angles, sit in front of it in silence, and experience the stillness it evokes. The serene setting at the foothills of the Velliangiri Mountains adds to the meditative atmosphere.
