We hear people say about sinus infection. What are sinuses? They are basically these spaces in the skull which are present to reduce the weight of the skull and the most common sinus infection is the maxillary sinus infection which is located above the upper teeth in the upper jaw. So whenever there is a an infection of the sinus it may not be related to any tooth directly but patient complaints of pain in the teeth very distinctly saying there is a pain in the teeth and it could come form a cavity or infection in the tooth there, but we have to rule out whether it is a sinus infection or a tooth infection. The dentist usually takes a radiograph or an OPG, x-ray to see if all the teeth are okay. There are other tests we do like the hot and cold rest to check the vitality of the teeth. When all of this seems normal. There is also a history of pain when the patient is lying down, we do attribute that to a sinus infection move from the common cold or the allergy or other issues. Also there is one way when the sinuses can get affected from the tooth itself. When the root canal treatment is to be carried out, the instruments that we use, pass through the roots and whether you pierce the sinus or there is debris or bacteria that go into the sinus. That itself can cause sinus infection. By itself the sinus infection can mimic tooth infection but a tooth infection can also cause sinus infection sometimes.
