After the withdrawal of the Non-Cooperation Movement, Azad turned toward revolutionary activity and became an important figure in the Hindustan Republican Association, later associated with the Hindustan Socialist Republican Association. He became involved in revolutionary operations including the Kakori train action and worked alongside figures such as Bhagat Singh, Rajguru, Sukhdev, Ram Prasad Bismil and Ashfaqullah Khan. For years, British authorities struggled to capture him. But everything changed in 1931. With the revolutionary organization under enormous pressure and Bhagat Singh, Rajguru and Sukhdev facing execution, Azad travelled to Allahabad and met his associate Sukhdev Raj at Alfred Park. Unknown to them, a police informant had revealed Azad's location. Soon, British police surrounded the park. Azad ordered Sukhdev Raj to escape while he stayed behind to hold off the police. What followed was a fierce gun battle between one revolutionary and a large police force. Wounded and surrounded, Azad continued fighting until only one bullet remained. What happened next became the final chapter of his extraordinary life.
