Bamberg Walking Tour | Germany's Charming Medieval Town

Join us on a beautiful winter walking tour through Bamberg, Germany, a city filled with history, stunning architecture, and charming canals. We begin at the Old Town Hall (Altes Rathaus), one of Bamberg’s most famous sights. Built in the middle of the Regnitz River, this half-timbered building looks like something from a fairy tale. Fun fact: The legend says that Bamberg’s bishop refused to give the townspeople land for a town hall, so they built it on an artificial island! Next, we head to the impressive Bamberg Cathedral (Bamberger Dom), a stunning Romanesque-Gothic structure dating back to the 13th century. Inside, we capture its beautiful interior, including the tomb of Emperor Henry II and Pope Clement II, the only pope buried north of the Alps. From there, we walk to the Old Court (Alte Hofhaltung), a historic palace that once housed Bamberg’s bishops. Its picturesque timber-framed buildings and inner courtyard take you back in time. Continuing our tour, we visit Little Venice (Klein Venedig), a row of charming half-timbered houses along the river, once home to Bamberg’s fishermen. This area offers some of the most scenic views in the city. We then walk past Gabelmoo, a famous statue at Grüner Markt, one of Bamberg’s busiest squares filled with shops and cafes. The name “Gabelmoo” translates to “Fork Man,” referring to the statue’s distinctive design. Next, we stop at the Kettenbrücke, a historic bridge connecting Bamberg’s old and new town. While its original suspension design is gone, it remains an important landmark in the city. Finally, we end our walk back at the Ludwig-Donau-Main Canal, an old trade route once used to connect the Danube and Main Rivers. Today, it’s a peaceful place to enjoy the views, things to do in Bamberg and its rich history.
