10. Why AI Takes Time: Understanding Algorithms and Data
Why do some AI tools answer within seconds while other AI tasks take several minutes, hours, or even weeks?
The answer is not always computing power. The method used to complete the task—called an algorithm—can make an enormous difference.
In this beginner-friendly video, algorithms and AI speed are explained through simple examples from everyday life. No coding, complicated mathematics, or technical background is required.
An algorithm is simply a step-by-step method used to complete a task. A cooking recipe, a navigation route, a dictionary search, and a computer program can all be understood as different forms of step-by-step processes.
In this video, you will learn:
• What an algorithm means
• How a recipe is similar to an algorithm
• Why the order of steps can affect the result
• How different methods can complete the same task
• Why organised data can be searched faster
• The difference between sorted and unsorted data
• How data size affects processing time
• Why algorithm choice becomes more important as data grows
• How sorting algorithms work
• Why two sorting methods can produce the same result at different speeds
• The difference between AI training and AI inference
• Why chatbot answers can appear within seconds
• Why training a new AI model may take days or weeks
• How database organisation affects search speed
• Why a slow AI tool is not necessarily broken
The video begins with a familiar example: a cooking recipe.
A recipe contains a sequence of steps. When those steps are followed in the correct order, they produce the desired result. An algorithm works in a similar way—it provides a method for completing a particular task.
However, the same task can often be completed using different methods.
Imagine searching for a word in an alphabetically organised dictionary. You do not need to check every page. You can open the dictionary near the required letter, eliminate large sections, and quickly narrow the search.
Now imagine searching for one electricity bill inside a box filled with unsorted bills and receipts. You may need to inspect every document until you find the correct one.
Both methods can find the required information, but they may take very different amounts of time.
When the amount of data is small, this difference may not seem important. When the data grows from hundreds to thousands or millions of items, the difference can become enormous.
This principle is demonstrated through a live sorting visualiser. Two different methods receive the same numbers and try to arrange them in the same order. One method completes the task quickly, while the other continues performing repeated comparisons.
The data is the same.
The goal is the same.
The method is different.
This is why choosing the right algorithm matters.
