This episode of Vet in a Van jumps forward a couple of months in our travels following Tania’s heart attack, and this time we find ourselves in Hahndorf in the Adelaide Hills. Hahndorf is Australia’s oldest surviving German settlement, established in 1839, and it’s one of those places where you can quite happily spend a week without needing to venture very far. We set ourselves up at Discovery Parks – Hahndorf and spend the week exploring the town, which for us mostly means eating our way through some seriously good German food. There are schnitzels, sausages and plenty of other German favourites, before we head out to Beerenberg Farm where things become considerably more strawberry-focused. Beerenberg has been growing strawberries in Hahndorf for generations and has been running its pick-your-own strawberry experience since 1975. We make our way through plenty of strawberry treats while we’re there. One of the real highlights of the week, though, is a visit to The Cedars, the former home and studio of Sir Hans Heysen and his daughter Nora Heysen. Hans Heysen became one of Australia’s best-known landscape artists and was particularly famous for his paintings of the enormous gum trees around the Adelaide Hills. Walking through the house, seeing his studio and then looking out across some of the same landscapes he painted was pretty incredible. Neither of us really knew what to expect going in, but it ended up being one of those places that completely catches you by surprise. Hahndorf turned out to be a great little base for a week. Good food, plenty of history, strawberries, art and a beautiful part of the Adelaide Hills to explore. In this episode: • Exploring Hahndorf, South Australia • German food in Hahndorf • Beerenberg Strawberry Farm • The Cedars, home of Hans and Nora Heysen • Hans Heysen’s Australian landscape art • Discovery Parks – Hahndorf #adelaidehills #southaustralia #caravantravel
