At night, a tunnel in Alaska closes, and a whole town is cut off until morning. Almost everyone in Whittier lives in the same fourteen-story building, along with the post office, the clinic, the church and the stores. In this video we look at how a World War II army port turned into a town under one roof, why the only road in is a single-lane tunnel, what happened to the neighbouring town of Portage in the 1964 earthquake, and what winter life inside Begich Towers is like. Subscribe to Lost Towns of the World for a new story about a lost, abandoned or unusual town every week. Footage: stock video and archive images, illustrative.
