Tonight, we walk through a Victorian London fog of coal smoke, from the first lamp lit at dusk to the fish markets waking before dawn. What was it really like to find your way home through air that tasted faintly of coal? We follow one November evening in 1884 through the coal-smoke fog of London. We meet the cook banking her kitchen range in Pimlico, the lamplighter working his round by feel, the link-boy leading a gentleman home with his lantern, the lighterman bringing his barge in on the tide, the flower girl selling violets outside Covent Garden, the cabman feeling his way along the Strand, the constable walking his beat, and the coffee-stall woman serving the night's workers as the small hours arrive. About two hours of slow, gentle history with soft rain in the background and no sudden sounds. Dim the lights, settle in, and let the fog settle softly around you. 🕯️ CHAPTERS 0:00 Intro 1:02 The Yellow Air 9:18 The Lamplighter's Round 17:34 The Link-Boy's Lantern 25:56 The River in the Dark 34:17 Covent Garden After the Curtain 42:44 The Music Hall Lets Out 50:37 The Hansom Cabman's Fog 59:30 A Constable's Beat 1:07:52 The Coffee Stall at Midnight 1:15:34 Smithfield Before Dawn 1:24:49 Billingsgate's First Light 1:33:34 When the Fog Lifts 📚 SOURCES & FURTHER READING John Thomson & Adolphe Smith — Street Life in London (1877) Luke Howard — The Climate of London (1818–1820) Smoke Nuisance Abatement (Metropolis) Act 1853 — UK Parliament Peter Brimblecombe — The Big Smoke: A History of Air Pollution in London Since Medieval Times (1987) Metropolitan Police Service — History of the Met (founded by Robert Peel, 1829) 💬 Which street on this foggy walk would you have wanted a lantern for most?
