The relationship between the referee and the players seems very different from what I’m used to seeing in American sports. In this reaction, I take a look at The Art of Rugby Refereeing and some great examples of referees communicating with players, managing the game, and earning respect in situations that could easily become heated. What stands out to me most is that the respect seems to go both ways. The players listen to the referee, but the referee also communicates with them and treats them with respect. It’s one of the things I’ve really come to appreciate about rugby. Let me know what you think.
