In 1959, Canada ordered the destruction of the Avro Arrow, one of the most advanced interceptors in the world. Cutting torches turned supersonic aircraft into scrap, and almost nothing survived. Why would a nation erase its own masterpiece?
This is the full story of the Avro CF-105 Arrow: the Cold War fear that created it, the Iroquois engine built from scratch, the day it rolled out on the same day as Sputnik, the “Black Friday” cancellation that left 14,000 people out of work, and the engineers who went on to help build NASA’s Gemini spacecraft.
Was cancelling the Arrow a mistake, or the only possible choice? Tell me in the comments.
