Everybody calls Jacob Black a werewolf. Jacob calls himself one. The pack does it, Bella does it, Charlie does it. Then in Breaking Dawn, standing in a snow-covered field in front of the Volturi, Aro corrects it in a single line, and Jacob finds out at the same time the reader does. Bella looks over at him and he just shrugs, because he had no idea either. So I went through all five books on this one. What a shape-shifter actually is in Meyer’s canon, who the real werewolves are, and why Caius spent a few thousand years hunting the Children of the Moon to near extinction across Europe and Asia. Aro’s line is the part that should have broken the fandom’s brain twenty years ago. He says the wolf form was purely chance. It could have been a bear, or a hawk, or a panther. Jacob is a wolf because of a coin flip. Then there’s the Quileute side of it, which almost nobody covers. Before they were wolves they were spirit warriors who could step out of their bodies, and the reason there are any wolves at all comes down to a chief who got locked out of his own body and asked an animal if he could come in. One more thing I found while checking this. The word shape-shifter shows up in these books before Aro ever says it. Billy Black uses it a whole book earlier, at the bonfire in Eclipse.
