“There is an innate purity in discomfort, and something to be said for the solace found in solitude. There is something inside my DNA that craves exploration, and I can’t imagine living without it. In my mind, monotony is not only the killer of creativity but also the killer of motivation. Sometimes, for me, a change of environment and a change of scenery is all that’s needed when monotony starts to creep in. Projects like these always begin with exploration. Long days of wandering unfamiliar places eventually become days of building, testing, filming, and countless takes until everything comes together. The grueling hours of manual labor and the quiet hours spent getting lost before any of it existed are what make it all so rewarding in the end. After thirty years in the trees, I realized that visiting the desert a couple times a year wasn’t enough. I wanted to call it home. I find something therapeutic about getting lost and spending time in the desert by myself. Maybe it’s because it’s so different from where I grew up in the redwood forests of Northern California, or maybe it’s because the vastness of the desert is so glaringly different from the density and seemingly claustrophobic nature of the forest. Whatever it is, it’s what’s kept me going throughout all these years of riding, building, and creating.
