You can see a war, a recipe and a fall in three swipes. None of the clips has to be false. Twelve seconds, three lives, one gesture. The interface gives events with radically unequal claims on us the same procedural status: each is the current item until it is replaced. Simone Weil never saw a feed. She spent her life on the question underneath it not how long we look, but whether another person becomes real to us at all. Her terms: attention as a negative effort, affliction as distinct from ordinary suffering, decreation as the loosening of the ego's claim to the centre. What this is not: a video telling you that scrolling past proves you do not care. It does not. The sequence was engineered, attention is finite, and refusing exposure can be a legitimate boundary. The essay also documents what circulation has genuinely done money that arrived, evidence that was preserved, a warrant that was issued and lets Weil lose part of the argument. CHAPTERS 0:00 The twelve seconds 0:49 Everything arrives in the same rectangle 2:59 Attention is not concentration 2:20 Suffering is not yet affliction 8:26 From an anonymous case to someone 10:34 Decreation inside a system of self-display 14:20 The case against this episode 18:00 What the mechanism owes us 20:03 The final swipe SOURCES Simone Weil, Waiting for God (Emma Craufurd's translation) and the essay usually translated as Human Personality. Gravity and Grace is a posthumous compilation assembled by Gustave Thibon, not a book she wrote as a book, and the video says so. Also discussed: the 2017 PNAS study led by Paul Slovic on donation patterns, and the 2017 ICC arrest warrant that relied heavily on social-media footage. This is an essay to think with. If a question here is yours rather than theoretical, take it to someone qualified who can know your circumstances.
