Behind the NRL premierships, the success and the public image was a battle very few people could see.
In this deeply personal TVNZ I Am documentary, I share my journey from professional rugby league to one of the darkest periods of my life — and the road back to finding strength, purpose and hope.
This is more than my story. It is a kōrero about mental health, identity, vulnerability, whānau, resilience, recovery, and reconnecting with te ao Māori.
A powerful part of my healing was reconnecting with who I am and where I come from — my whakapapa, my culture and my identity as Māori. That reconnection reminded me that strength is not something we have to find alone; sometimes it is already within us, carried through our whakapapa and those who came before us.
I share the mistakes I made, the pain I carried and the lessons that ultimately changed my life. Not because I have all the answers, but because sometimes hearing someone else’s truth can give us permission to face our own.
Today, those experiences sit at the heart of my mahi through Internal Strength — supporting people to understand that real strength isn’t about pretending everything is okay. Sometimes, strength is having the courage to speak, ask for help and begin again.
If this documentary helps even one person start a kōrero, check on a mate, reconnect with who they are, or realise there is another way forward, then sharing my story has been worth it.
He Mana ā Roto — Strength from Within.
