I Call Bullsh*t on AI Fearmongering | These experts are not the good guy

I am so f*cking tired of hearing AI experts who helped build this technology suddenly go on podcasts and tell the rest of us that AI is going to destroy humanity. And to be clear, I’m not saying AI risks aren’t real. I’m not even saying these people are necessarily wrong about the technology having serious consequences. What pisses me off is the way some of these conversations seem to work: we built this thing, we made a shitload of money, we’re financially secure, and now we’re going to warn you that everyone else is f*cked. Okay. Then what? If you genuinely believe we are facing an enormous technological threat, why are you spending your time fearmongering to ordinary people who have almost no ability to change the laws governing AI? Why aren’t you using your expertise, money, influence and access to talk to the people who actually make policy? I also think there’s something incredibly frustrating about hearing these warnings after the fact. People were encouraged into computer science and other technical careers for years, while the people closest to the technology had opportunities to talk about how quickly those jobs might change. Maybe I’m cynical becayse some of these people genuinely do care. But I’m not interested in being scared for entertainment. If you think something is going wrong, stop going on podcasts and do something about it.
