What happened to Eva Braun's family after the war? Hitler's wife died in the Berlin bunker in April 1945, but her parents, her sisters Ilse and Gretl, and Gretl's newborn daughter had to live on as Hitler's in-laws in post-war Germany. This documentary follows the Braun family from the last letters of April 1945 through the denazification tribunals, the forged Eva Braun diary and the quiet decades in Bavaria. Days before Hitler and Eva Braun died, Gretl's husband, the SS general Hermann Fegelein, was shot in the Reich Chancellery garden. Gretl gave birth to his daughter, Eva Barbara, five days after her sister's death. Fritz and Franziska Braun were then classed among the "offenders" and told a Munich court they hadn't known about their daughter's relationship with Hitler. Historians like Heike Görtemaker have found that story hard to believe. We look at what Eva Braun left in her 1944 will, why a Munich court confiscated her estate, what became of the Munich villa Hitler bought for her, and how the family fought Luis Trenker's fake diary in 1948. We also cover Ilse Braun's years working for a Jewish doctor, Gretl's second marriage and silence, cousin Gertraud Weisker's late memoir, the tragic death of Eva Barbara Fegelein in 1971, and the 2014 DNA claim about Eva Braun's ancestry. Victims or beneficiaries? The evidence from both sides is laid out so you can decide.
