Sossusvlei had been on our bucket list since we left Scotland — so we never expected to arrive and find one of the oldest, driest deserts on Earth underwater.
In this episode, we continue our journey through Namibia’s ever - changing landscapes: searching for ancient San rock art in the Erongo Mountains, getting slightly out of our depth on the trail to Elephant Rock, taking remote gravel-road detours through the Guab Valley, and wild camping beneath some of the clearest skies we have ever seen.
We cross the Tropic of Capricorn, tackle the spectacular Gamsberg and Spreetshoogte Passes, and finally complete an extremely important desert mission: eating Solitaire’s legendary apple pie.
Then comes Sossusvlei. Between a near-sleepless windy night, a rear-door latch failure on the Land Rover, the brutal climb up Big Daddy, and the surreal black trees of Deadvlei, our long-awaited visit does not quite go to plan — but it is an experience we will never forget.
We’re Ken and Rose, driving our 26-year-old Land Rover Defender from Edinburgh, Scotland, across Africa. This is our sixteenth country and our seventh week exploring Namibia.
