More Batuku with Leader Dona Ina in São Dominos, Santiago, June 1993

This is footage shot by Susan Hurley-Glowa and Josef Glowa in São Domingos, Cabo Verde in late June 1993. Dona Ina is the main group leader. --The first 8 minutes show people eating , drinking (a lot!) and talking at a school on June 20, 1993 -The rest of the video shows the batuku group playing and dancing through a series of songs. At 40:00, I join the group and the women show me how to participate. It was filmed with the permission of the main participants as part of ethnomusicology research funded by a Fulbright Grant in 1992-93 for my PhD at Brown University. I was encouraged to go to Santiago to study "the real traditions" by my good friend, Norberto Tavares. I later made a film and wrote a book on Norberto Tavares.
