[Novel]- The Empty Chair My father kept a small wooden chair in the middle of his field all his life. I always thought it was for resting when he got tired, but I never once saw him sit in it. “Dad, why don’t you ever sit?” “Just knowing there’s a place to sit gives me strength.” I didn’t understand what he meant back then. The autumn I came home from the city, broken down and worn out, I sat in that chair without a word. Dad didn’t ask me anything. He just stood beside me, gathering the last of the apples from the branches. The sunset settled slowly over every row of the field. “It’s okay to rest,” he said quietly behind me. At that one sentence, the breath I’d been holding finally let go. Now I understand. Dad hadn’t just left a chair in the field. He had been keeping a place for me, so I could always come back. Has someone ever kept a place for you without saying a word?
