The United States' first battle after independence was in Indiana and it didn't go too hot, to say the least. This new republic would fight its first war on its western frontiers in the wild, untamed region then called "Indiana". So how did this hostile wilderness - purposely left to the American Indians by the British simply for its difficulty to tame - become the pacified American State of Indiana we live in today? That history is long, violent, and treacherous - spanning almost half a century and across several distinct eras of American history. And it all started in 1790, when President Washington ordered General Josiah Harmar to raid and destroy the Miami village of Kekionga at the site of modern Fort Wayne, starting the US's first war against the American Indians living of Indiana and the broader Northwest Territory. In this video, we will go over American and Indian motivations, their actions, and their leaders; analyzing just how those actions have affected the world around us today.
