State-run Oil India has discovered natural gas in the previously unappraised Matsyapuri formation of the Krishna-Godavari Basin, with testing recording a peak flow rate of 200,000 standard cubic metres per day. The discovery was made at the Godavari-1 well at a depth of 2,024–2,027 metres. Production testing began on October 16, 2026, with condensate flow reaching approximately 170 barrels per day. Oil India is preparing to test another hydrocarbon-bearing zone to assess the formation’s potential. This India Gas Discovery adds momentum to India’s wider oil and gas exploration drive. ONGC recently reported a natural gas discovery in the Mahanadi Offshore Basin off Odisha, while Oil India previously found gas in the Andaman offshore basin near the Andaman Islands and the Andaman Sea. The government’s Samudra Manthan scheme, with an allocation of ₹84,084 crore through financial year 2030–31, supports offshore exploration, including deepwater drilling.
