This tutorial shows a step-by-step guide on how to model a 3D Axe in Autodesk Maya. You will also practice this to strengthen your modeling like a pro.
Axe Modeling in Autodesk Maya – Step-by-Step
Create the Axe Head
=========================================
1. Open Autodesk Maya and switch to the Modeling workspace.
2. Create a Polygon Cylinder.
3. Reduce the cylinder's Subdivisions Axis to create a low-poly shape, as shown in the tutorial.
4. Adjust the Height and Radius to form the basic axe-head block.
5. Go into Face Selection mode and select the required faces.
6. Use Extrude Face to extend the selected area.
7. Scale and move the extruded faces to begin forming the axe blade.
8. Switch to the Side View to shape the blade accurately.
9. Use the Scale and Move tools to make the blade wider toward the cutting edge and narrower near the handle.
10. Add additional edge loops using the Insert Edge Loop Tool to give better control over the blade shape.
11. Move the vertices and edge loops to create the curved upper and lower edges of the axe blade.
12. Shape the outer cutting edge into a sharp, pointed form.
Refine the Axe Head

13. Check the model from different views, especially Side View and Perspective View.
14. Adjust the vertices around the blade so that both sides have a clean and balanced shape.
15. Add supporting edge loops where necessary to maintain the shape.
16. Smooth or soften the model using Smooth Preview to check how the final surface will look.
17. Correct any unwanted sharp corners or uneven areas.
Create the Handle

18. Create another Polygon Cylinder for the axe handle.
19. Set the cylinder to have enough subdivisions around the axis for a smooth handle.
20. Adjust the cylinder's radius and height to match the size of the axe head.
21. Position the cylinder through the opening of the axe head.
22. Add several edge loops along the handle.
23. Select different edge loops and use the Scale and Move tools to give the handle a slightly curved shape.
24. Make the handle narrower in the middle and adjust the upper and lower sections for a more natural wooden-handle shape.
25. Slightly bend the handle so it does not remain perfectly straight.
Add Supporting Details

26. Add additional edge loops near the top and bottom of the handle to control its shape.
27. Adjust the vertices around the handle connection so that it fits naturally into the axe head.
28. Check the connection between the axe blade, head, and handle from multiple angles.
29. Make final adjustments to the proportions and alignment.
Final Check
=========================================
30. Turn on Smooth Preview to inspect the final model.
31. Check for unwanted intersections, uneven geometry, or sharp edges.
32. Adjust the vertices and edge loops wherever necessary.
33. View the completed axe in Perspective View.
34. The final model consists of a shaped axe head/blade and a curved cylindrical handle.
