I went to Garhwal, Uttarakhand, a state carved out in 2000, but now the villages are vanishing. What I saw there was concerning: • A village called Jhala once had 50-70 residents. Today: zero. Not one person left. • Pauri is Uttarakhand's most educated district, but 1,600 schools have shut because there are no children left to teach.  • 8 lakh+ people have migrated out of the state in the last 14 years alone. • Some villages are 4-6 hours from the nearest hospital. • 900+ people have died in wildlife attacks since 2000, pushing entire families to abandon their homes. Ye saare gaaon nakshe pe to hai, par zameen pe nahi. Why are these villages empty? Why are people migrating?
