Impressions from Wakatobi Dive Resort – the one and only original

Some impressions from Wakatobi Dive Resort in Southwest Sulawesi, Indonesia. My equipment was primarily set up for photography, so the video clips are more of a by-product. Most of them were recorded with a GoPro HERO 13, which was running continuously as a “log cam” and mounted on the hot shoe of the underwater housing. A few individual clips were also shot with an Insta360 X5 and a DJI Mavic 3. The resort is celebrating its 30th anniversary in 2026. After single-handedly putting the region on the map and protecting 60 km of reef, it was the only dive operation in the area for more than 20 years. Unfortunately, in recent years, more and more low-cost operators have been moving in and taking advantage of the groundwork laid by the resort. They seem to be less interested in reef conservation than in making a profit, offering diving at sites discovered by the resort to all kinds of divers, ranging from highly skilled to, well, less talented. You can form your own opinion about these operators by looking at the relevant reports.
