The Mafia's Favorite Kansas Restaurants (That Are STILL OPEN Today)
In September of two thousand eight, a security camera inside one of Kansas City's best-known steakhouses recorded a co-owner giving a visitor a fifty-minute tour at dawn. By the end of it, the visitor had a key and the code to the alarm. Three weeks later, the same cameras watched two men carry fourteen jugs of gasoline in through the back. The co-owner was Rod Anderson, a civic leader who used to star in his own television commercials. The man with the key, prosecutors said, was Vincent Pisciotta, who mob reporters list as a soldier in the Kansas City crime family. And the thing they were both after wasn't the steaks. It was roughly two point four million dollars in insurance money. So, who won? Nobody who lit that fire. Almost every room the mob sat down in is gone now. The steakhouse isn't. It opened in nineteen fifty-seven, and tonight it's still grilling steaks over charcoal across the state line in Shawnee, Kansas. This is a map of where Kansas City's mob ate, schemed, got wiretapped and got blown up, on both sides of State Line, and which of those doors still open for dinner. Every stop has a paper trail. Federal court records, Justice Department releases, the Kansas City Star, and the men who chased these guys, retired FBI agent Bill Ouseley and former detective Gary Jenkins. If a detail is only family legend, I'll say so. Stick around to the end, and I'll give you the date the man with the key is due to walk out of federal prison.
