A Tribute to Ssaalongo Christopher Kiryowa: The People's Champion
Today, we remember and honor the life, music, and ultimate sacrifice of the legendary Ssaalongo Christopher Kiryowa. He was more than just a musician; he was the voice of the voiceless and the official artist for the Forum for Democratic Change (FDC), using his talent as a powerful weapon in the fight for justice and democratic change in Uganda.
From 2001 until his untimely passing in 2013, Ssaalongo Kiryowa’s music was a rallying cry for a better Uganda. His songs were anthems of hope and resistance, earning him the loyalty of the people but also the wrath of the establishment. For his unwavering support of Dr. Kizza Besigye and the opposition movement, he paid a heavy price. He was imprisoned multiple times, yet he never stopped singing for the change he believed in.
His story took a tragic and sinister turn when he was allegedly poisoned for his political allegiance. His death is a stark reminder of the dangers faced by those who dare to speak truth to power through art. Ssaalongo Christopher Kiryowa did not just sing about change—he lived it, and ultimately, he died for it.
Rest in power, Ssaalongo. Your voice may have been silenced, but your message will echo through eternity.
