St. Ippolyts church is a medieval and now extremely well kept and loved Parish Church, located in a stunning village high on the Hill overlooking Hitchin, Hertfordshire. Filmed on the 26th September 2026 Camera's - DJI Mini 5 pro and DJI Pocket 4 Origins and Foundation • Traditional Founding: The church is traditionally dated to 1087. • The Builder: Local tradition states it was funded by Judith, the niece of William the Conqueror, to make amends for testifying against an executed Saxon Earl. • Original Structure: It originally consisted only of a nave and a short chancel, with no side aisles. Architectural Evolution • 14th Century: The church expanded significantly around 1320, adding side aisles, arches, and remodeling the chancel in the Decorated style. The west tower also dates from the 14th century. • 15th Century: The flint-faced north porch and the timber-framed south porch were constructed. The tower features a leadwork plinth and cross added in 1636. • 19th Century: The building underwent an extensive Victorian restoration in 1878–1879, reusing original stonework where possible. Dedication and Legends Saint Hippolytus: The North Hertfordshire Museum notes the church is dedicated to Saint Hippolytus, making it one of only two English churches with this dedication. • Horses and Legends: Because the Greek word hippos means horse, the saint is tied to horses, leading to legends that sick horses were brought here for healing and blessings. • Knights Templar: A local legend claims that Knights Templar from nearby Temple Dinsley carved crosses into the stonework as they left; one such cross remains visible on a south aisle pillar
