How did ancient humans survive when there was no bottled water, no filtration system, no plumbing, and no guarantee that the water they found was actually safe to drink?
In this video, we explore one of the most basic problems prehistoric humans faced every day: finding enough water to survive without the clean drinking water we take for granted today.
Through our stick-figure prehistoric world, we look at where ancient humans likely found water, how rivers, springs, rain, plants, containers, fire, movement, and experience helped them reduce the risks of drinking contaminated water, and why choosing the wrong water source could become a serious problem.
For prehistoric people, getting thirsty was only part of the danger. Mud, animal waste, stagnant pools, parasites, changing seasons, and long distances between reliable water sources could all turn something as simple as drinking into a survival challenge.
So how did humans learn which water was safer? What did they do when clean water was difficult to find? And how much did their daily routine depend on staying close to reliable sources?
This video explores how ancient humans dealt with drinking water before filters, taps, bottles, and modern sanitation existed.
