Missing targets you used to break? Before you buy a new gun, look at the cheapest things on a fitter's bench. Joon, who fits shotguns to older shooters, walks you through thirty-five gun fit tricks — most of them cost nothing or a few dollars, and almost all of them can be taken off again.
In this video:
Tricks 1-8: where your cheek lands on the comb (chalk on the cheek, a friend at your side, measuring drop with a yardstick, moleskin, comb pads, a lace-on raiser)
Tricks 9-17: length of pull (tape measure, the elbow test and why it lies, the two-finger gap, jacket and glove tests, spacers, slip-on pads)
Tricks 18-23: the butt pad and pitch (tape on the heel, reading pitch at the wall, the chalk shirt test, toe and a fuller chest)
Tricks 24-30: is your eye over the rib? (a mark on the wall, a phone photo, a friend behind you, weight, glasses, cap brim, a loose stock)
Tricks 31-34: the pattern plate, done properly
Trick 35: the fitting kit many shooters already own and never opened
Two of the tricks cost more than a few dollars (the lace-on comb raiser and the slip-on pad); Joon says which. "Old Korean gunsmiths" means one old stockmaker in Busan who taught Joon — there is no Korean school of shotgun fitting.
Sources mentioned: American Hunter, "How to Achieve Perfect Shotgun Fit" (Phil Bourjaily, 2010); Field & Stream on stock shims (Phil Bourjaily); Shooting UK reader answer on weight and gun fit (2013).
Which trick will you try first? Tell me in the comments with one word: CHALK, WALL or SHIMS.
Safety: every check at home is done with the gun EMPTY, checked twice, no shells in the room, pointed at a safe wall — and nobody ever stands in front of the muzzle. Nothing is ever fired at home. Shoot the pattern plate only at a range that allows it, following its rules. Any cut, bend, shortening or permanent change to a stock belongs to a qualified gunsmith or gun fitter; change shims or stock bolts only if your manual says it is an owner job. This video is not medical advice; if your eyes have changed, see an eye doctor. No result is guaranteed.
