Japan expected America’s naval power to depend only on massive fleet carriers. But a different kind of carrier changed the Pacific War forever.
This video reveals how America transformed ordinary merchant hulls into thousands of aircraft-carrying war machines, creating an escort carrier fleet that Japan never considered a serious threat. From Henry Kaiser’s revolutionary mass-production methods to the desperate Battle off Samar, these small carriers delivered a massive strategic impact across the Pacific.
On October 25, 1944, six escort carriers of Taffy 3 found themselves facing one of Japan’s most powerful surface fleets — battleships, heavy cruisers, and destroyers. They were slower, smaller, and never designed for a fleet battle. Yet their aircraft launched hundreds of sorties, disrupting Vice Admiral Takeo Kurita’s Center Force and changing the outcome of one of the most dramatic naval engagements of World War II.
