In this vlog, I put Kimi K3, Moonshot’s powerful open-source/open-weight AI model, to the test by giving it a real software development project: building my own Linktree-style links page generator from scratch. I use Kimi with an agentic coding harness to design the architecture, write thousands of lines of code, create automated unit and Playwright end-to-end tests, debug problems, and ultimately deploy the finished application to Vercel. Along the way, I compare Kimi’s software development capabilities with Anthropic’s Claude 5 Fable, explore how AI agents use tools, skills, MCP, and context windows, and examine some of the surprising problems that can happen when AI starts writing and debugging real production software. Kimi wasn’t perfect. It crashed several times, struggled with a nasty race-condition bug, and at one point even asked for my production deployment keys! But the final results were surprisingly impressive. I also look at the economics of AI coding. Building this application consumed tens of millions of tokens and cost me just over $50 through an OpenRouter reseller. Using Claude for the same workload could have cost more than $200. Is Kimi a legitimate alternative to Claude? And should we be worried about becoming dependent on a handful of AI companies? Let’s find out.
