Why can’t we simply replace plastic with paper, glass or something made from plants? The answer starts with the job a package has to do—and follows it all the way to its next use or disposal.
Using an imagined lunch business, Price & Matter explores food protection, material trade-offs, bio-based and compostable plastics, manufacturing scale, recycling and reuse. A promising material is only part of the answer: supply, collection, cleaning and return systems have to work too.
The opening soup-in-a-plain-paper-bag example is a thought experiment about matching packaging to its job. It is not a product test or a claim that paper packaging always fails.
