Gustav Mahler Symphony No. 5 in C-sharp minor 1. In gemessenem Schritt. Streng. Wie ein Kondukt. (00:07) 2. Stürmisch bewegt. Mit grösster Vehemenz. (11:46) 3. Kräftig, nicht zu schnell. (24:21) 4. Adagietto. Sehr langsam. (39:29) 5. Rondo-Finale. Allegro giocoso (47:06) Bruno Walter, conductor New York Philharmonic Orchestra Recorded on February 10, 1947 in Carnegie Hall, New York City One of the concerns that Gustav Mahler expressed to his protégés was his belief that future conductors would have a tendency to over broaden his symphonies. Over a century later his projections have proven to be true. Bruno Walter was one of his most distinguished protégés, and a very close friend. After Mahler's music was barred from performance during WWII, Bruno Walter traveled the world in a successful effort to bring it back onto concert stages. The present recording comes from that period, and represents the conductor at his best. Over ten minutes shorter than most other performances of the work, the present recording is regarded by many as being very close to Mahler's original perspective. Walter, like Mahler's other protégés, made notes of the composer's ideas about the music, and referred to them during his career. Tight, neat, and powerful, this is often seen as the "reference" performance of this symphony.
