You listen to Chinese, learn new words, and practise useful sentences. However, speaking may still feel slow, and complete conversations may still be difficult to understand. This does not always mean that your Chinese has stopped improving. Like a small tree growing new roots under the soil, some of your most important progress may be happening where you cannot see it yet. In this HSK 1–2 Chinese Listening Podcast, Zhang Yue and Li Yang use simple, natural, everyday Chinese to discuss hidden progress, strong foundations, and how to continue when learning feels slow. 🌳 In this episode, you will hear: 🌱 Why a small tree can be growing even without producing new leaves 🏊 How basic practice helped Zhang Yue learn to swim 🍎 How Anna discovered her hidden Chinese progress at a fruit shop 🎯 Why our rising expectations can make progress difficult to notice 👀 Why comparing ourselves with other learners is often unfair 🌾 The Chinese story behind the expression 拔苗助长 📚 How daily listening, repetition, and use build stronger Chinese foundations 📝 How a simple progress card can help you see your improvement ❤️ Why resting for a day does not mean giving up 💡 Three daily root-building actions: You do not need to study for many hours or learn one hundred new words every day. Try completing these three small actions: 1️⃣ Listen to five minutes of Chinese that you can mostly understand. 2️⃣ Choose three useful short sentences. Repeat them once, and then say them again by yourself. 3️⃣ Use one of those sentences during the same day. You can say it to a friend or to yourself. Listen for five minutes, practise three short sentences, and use one sentence. These small actions may not make you fluent tomorrow, but they can gradually make your Chinese foundation stronger. 📝 Create a simple progress card: Once a week, write down three things you can now do in Chinese. For example: 🔹 I understood a question from a shop assistant. 🔹 I bought a train ticket in Chinese. 🔹 I understood a familiar sentence without translating it. Do not only count how many new words you studied. Notice the Chinese you can understand and use in real life. 🌾 A lesson from 拔苗助长: In the story, an impatient farmer thought his young plants were growing too slowly. He pulled each plant upward to make it look taller. The plants appeared taller for a short time, but their roots were damaged, and they could no longer grow. Chinese learning also needs time. Trying to learn too much too quickly can make you tired and cause you to give up. 🎯 Recommended practice: First time: Listen to the complete conversation and understand the main stories. Second time: Notice expressions about learning, progress, roots, listening, and repetition. Third time: Choose three useful sentences, pause the audio, and repeat them aloud. Daily practice: Listen for five minutes and use one familiar Chinese sentence in your own life. 🌱 Remember: Do not judge your roots by looking at someone else’s leaves. Do not ask yourself every day how many centimetres your Chinese tree has grown. Give it a little water, sunlight, practice, and time. If you stop for one day, you can return the next day. Resting is not the same as giving up. 💬 今天的两个问题: 第一个问题,李阳把小树放在家里的什么地方? 第二个问题,故事里的农民向上拉了什么? Please write both answers in the comments. You can write only the answers or respond using complete Chinese sentences. Think about something you could not do before but can do now. Write it down and tell yourself: 我真的进步了。 If your Chinese feels slow, do not be discouraged. You may not be standing still. You may simply be growing deeper roots. 🎧 Learn Chinese. Use Chinese.
