On January 8, 1993, the closing shift at a Brown’s Chicken restaurant in Palatine, Illinois should have ended like any other Friday night. Instead, seven people — restaurant owners Richard and Lynn Ehlenfeldt and employees Michael Castro, Rico Solis, Guadalupe Maldonado, Thomas Mennes and Marcus Nellsen — were murdered inside the restaurant. By the time police discovered the crime scene in the early hours of the following morning, the killers were gone. And they would remain unidentified for more than nine years. The Brown’s Chicken Massacre became one of Illinois’ most infamous unsolved murder cases, generating thousands of leads, numerous suspects and years of investigation without an arrest. But buried among the evidence collected from the restaurant was something that would eventually become crucial: partially eaten chicken recovered from the crime scene. In 2002, a breakthrough finally came when Anne Lockett revealed a secret she had kept for years, implicating her former boyfriend James Degorski and his friend Juan Luna in the murders.
