In 1925 you could ride a big red electric train from downtown LA to Venice Beach in under an hour, with no traffic, no parking and no 10 Freeway. For about fifty years, the Pacific Electric Red Cars ran one of the biggest rail systems on the planet, and they literally built the Westside: Santa Monica, Venice, Palms, Culver City, Sawtelle and more.
