Sumer: The Rise and Fall of the First Civilization

Welcome to the very first story in Reboot Life Now History. To understand the world we live in today, sometimes we have to go all the way back to the beginning. And that beginning takes us to Sumer — one of the earliest great civilizations in human history. Nearly six thousand years ago, in southern Mesopotamia, the Sumerians helped develop ideas and systems that would shape civilization for thousands of years: writing, the wheel, schools, law codes, organized government, large cities, monumental architecture, and some of humanity’s oldest recorded stories. In this episode, we follow the extraordinary story of Sumer from the first settlements and the rise of Eridu and Uruk to the development of irrigation, city-states, ziggurats, cuneiform writing, organized religion, warfare, trade, and government. We’ll also explore the world of Gilgamesh, the rise of Sargon and the Akkadian Empire, the Gutian invasions, the rebirth of Sumer under the Third Dynasty of Ur, and the final disappearance of independent Sumerian rule. But Sumer did not simply disappear. Later civilizations inherited and carried forward many of the systems the Sumerians had developed — writing, administration, religion, law, architecture, and other foundations of organized society. Their political power vanished, but their influence continued. This is where our journey through history begins. Welcome to Reboot Life Now History.
