The Dowager Invited the “Uneducated” Maid as a Joke — The Duke Couldn’t Stop Talking to Her...
Thursa Renmont hears that the Duke has returned while she is working among the twelve hives at Holmfall.
He has been gone nearly three years.
Thursa knows exactly how long because his departure coincided with the year the west roof began leaking—and nobody with enough authority to repair it has stood beneath it since.
She is not an educated lady.
At least, that is what the people in the drawing room assume.
Thursa works.
She keeps bees.
She observes.
She reads.
And she has spent years learning things society does not expect a woman in her position to know.
Then the Dowager and her fashionable guests decide to make entertainment of her.
There are thirteen expected at dinner.
Rather than allow superstition to leave thirteen at the table, the Dowager proposes inviting Thursa.
They will give the “uneducated” woman a good meal.
Everyone will be very civil.
And they can enjoy discovering what the cleverest servant in the county sounds like between the soup and the sweet.
Thursa understands perfectly well what the invitation means.
She goes anyway.
The joke does not unfold as expected.
The Duke begins talking to her.
And keeps talking.
Thursa has opinions because she has spent years actually observing the estate.
She understands the bees.
The land.
The neglected buildings.
The people.
And unlike the carefully educated guests around the table, she is willing to say when something does not make sense.
The Duke listens.
What begins as a cruel social experiment becomes the first time many of the people in that room realize that education and intelligence are not the same thing.
But Thursa refuses to become merely the Duke's fascinating discovery.
She has her own work.
Her own hives.
Her own knowledge.
And her own standards for how she expects to be treated.
Even the Dowager, who arranged the humiliating dinner, eventually has to confront what her assumptions cost.
Years later, she cannot quite bring herself to apologize in words.
Instead, she leaves Thursa the pearl earrings she wore at her own wedding—and a note acknowledging the woman who once dared to tell her the truth in her own drawing room.
When Thursa eventually becomes Duchess, her hives go with her.
They are moved carefully to the orchard.
She lays her hand against the first hive, just as she has always done.
“We are home.”
What begins as a Dowager's joke becomes a story about bees, class prejudice, intelligence, dignity, social humiliation, truth, and a Duke who discovers that the supposedly “uneducated” woman at his table is the person he most wants to hear speak.
💬 If you knew you had been invited to dinner only as a joke, would you attend and face them as Thursa did?
