Most people try to overcome their desires by asking, “What would Jesus do?” Instead, we have to learn how to abide in Christ. Simply trying to emulate Jesus is one of the most common ways that people leave the faith, because no one can live up to His Standard. Instead, through suffering that produces humility, we must learn to surrender fully to Christ.
For instance, if you’re struggling with deep depression, trying to live up to Christ’s Standards will do nothing but make things worse. He came to live the perfect life because no one had ever been able to. He tells us to be born again into His Spirit so the Holy Spirit can live through us.
We all have strongholds that keep us tied to the darkness. Paul says we have to break the strongholds, not by our own power, but by abiding in the God who resurrects the dead.
Remember, we’re “practicing” Christianity the same way a doctor “practices” medicine. The difference is, Christ is shaping us as we draw closer to Him. We have spent decades building up our identity of the world, so we have to have patience on how long it takes for it to be broken down. The more fed up we are with this life of suffering and death, the quicker we can “put on Christ” and be transformed in the Spirit.
(Romans 12:9-21) “Let love be genuine. Abhor what is evil; hold fast to what is good. Love one another with brotherly affection. Outdo one another in showing honor. Do not be slothful in zeal, be fervent in spirit, serve the Lord. Rejoice in hope, be patient in tribulation, be constant in prayer. Contribute to the needs of the saints and seek to show hospitality.
Bless those who persecute you; bless and do not curse them. Rejoice with those who rejoice, weep with those who weep. Live in harmony with one another. Do not be haughty, but associate with the lowly. Never be wise in your own sight. Repay no one evil for evil, but give thought to do what is honorable in the sight of all. If possible, so far as it depends on you, live peaceably with all. Beloved, never avenge yourselves, but leave it to the wrath of God, for it is written, “Vengeance is mine, I will repay, says the Lord.” To the contrary, “if your enemy is hungry, feed him; if he is thirsty, give him something to drink; for by so doing you will heap burning coals on his head.” Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good.”
(John 17:3) “And this is eternal life, that they know you, the only true God, and Jesus Christ whom you have sent.”
(John 3:16-18) ““For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life. For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but in order that the world might be saved through him. Whoever believes in him is not condemned, but whoever does not believe is condemned already, because he has not believed in the name of the only Son of God.”
