The Chamonix mountain rescue service is the busiest in the world. Established in 1958 France’s Peloton de Gendarmerie de Haute Montagne (PGHM) was established in 1958 and operates primarily in the Mont Blanc massif and the Haute Savoie region, which includes Annecy, one of Europe’s most popular paragliding destinations. It employs 38 professional rescuers across several bases. According to PGHM figures they carried out 1,753 rescues in 2024 – and that included dozens of paraglider pilot rescues. In this short film Advance team pilot and PGHM member Fred Souchon talk to some of the PGHM medics and mountain rescuers about what to do if you are the first on the scene at a paragliding accident. It's worth noting it is aimed at what to do if you witness an accident where there is a professional rescue service close at hand. It’s not aimed at situations where rescue is going to take longer, and it’s not a replacement for a first aid course or further training. Stay safe!
