Bhaila Pyakhan is a traditional Newar ritual masked dance associated with Madhyapur Thimi in the Kathmandu Valley. The word Bhaila refers to Bhairab, the powerful and protective manifestation of Lord Shiva, while Pyakhan means a traditional dance or dramatic performance. The dance is deeply connected with the religious beliefs and ritual traditions of the local Newar community.
In the Bhaila Pyakhan of Thimi, the traditional group consists of five sacred characters: Betal (Jyāpugāchā), Nyāpā Bhaila representing Chandika Bhairab, Lipā Bhaila representing Kapal Bhairab (Kocha Bhaila), Nyāpā Dāgi representing Kaumari (Balkumari), and Lipā Dāgi representing Mahalaxmi. Each character has a distinct role, costume, mask, and movement, creating a symbolic representation of divine and protective forces.
