The Galapagos Islands, a remote volcanic archipelago in the Pacific, are harsh, dry, and tropical—yet home to some of the world’s most unusual animals. Many species arrived by chance, carried by storms or ocean currents, and evolved remarkable adaptations to survive. The Humboldt Current brought penguins here, leading to the evolution of the tiny Galapagos penguin, the only penguin living in the tropics. The Galapagos cormorant, free from predators, lost the ability to fly and developed powerful bodies and small wings for deep, efficient diving. Behavioral adaptations are just as striking. On isolated Darwin and Wolf islands, the vampire finch survives by carefully drinking the blood of Nazca boobies—an extreme response to the lack of food and water. Most species here have evolved so specifically to the islands' harsh environment that they could live nowhere else. Life on the Galapagos swings between paradise and survival challenge. ➡ Fascinated by nature?
