Spurgeon opens with an extended meditation from nature and the human body — rivers, oceans, clouds, blood circulation — all demonstrating the universal law that nothing in God's creation thrives by hoarding, but only by giving, before narrowing this to the believer's specific duty to water fellow Christians: the constitutionally desponding who need constant comfort, the ignorant who need patient instruction, the sick shut away from public worship, the young recently transplanted into faith who will wither without attentive care, the persecuted who are growing in hostile soil, and the backsliding who need gentle pursuit rather than abandonment. He then proves the promise's fulfillment by four practical blessings that flow back to the waterer: wakened latent talents the person never knew they had, unexpected instruction received from the very people they went to teach (discovering saints chest-deep in divine love while the teacher was only ankle-deep), the living comfort that circulates back like blood — as chafing a frozen man's limbs to save him simultaneously saves the one doing the chafing — and a wealth of prayer from every converted soul who will intercede for the one God used to bring them to Christ. He closes with two wider applications: first, to his own congregation, insisting that the Metropolitan Tabernacle's twelve years of unbroken revival is directly tied to its policy of freely releasing members to plant other churches, train other preachers, and water other neighborhoods rather than hoarding talent at the center — and warning that the moment they sit still and stop flowing outward they will stagnate; and second, to the whole Protestant church, charging that London's million spiritually destitute souls can only be reached by Free churches zealously scattering the pure gospel, since a state church entangled with Puseyism and sacramentarianism is incapable of the work, and that any congregation in earnest must give everything to the task or answer to God for their abundance of opportunity squandered.
