Right away, though, Nakamura’s anxiety takes over. Even though he’s grouped with Hirose, he spends so much of the trip stuck in his own head, worrying that in Hirose’s world he’s nothing more than a faceless background character. I find myself frustrated for him at times because he clearly wants connection, but every time he tries to speak or join in, fear and self-doubt pull him back. Throughout the day he hangs behind the group, observing Hirose, overthinking every interaction, and still keeping a suspicious eye on Mr. Otogiri. One thing I really appreciate in this episode is how honestly it portrays social anxiety and isolation. Nakamura isn’t avoiding people because he dislikes them; he’s just terrified of rejection and convinced he doesn’t matter. Meanwhile Hirose slowly starts noticing all of Nakamura’s hesitation and the way he keeps holding himself back. That attention becomes really important later. Eventually the group splits up, and Nakamura wanders off alone to visit an aquarium. The moment he steps inside, I feel like I’m finally seeing Nakamura relax and become himself. This place is genuinely his happy place. Hirose follows after him and realizes Nakamura should’ve just been honest from the start about wanting to come there. From there, the episode becomes surprisingly intimate and heartfelt. Hirose does most of the talking while Nakamura happily listens, and Hirose admits that sometimes he enjoys being alone too. He explains that hanging around Takeuchi constantly can get overwhelming and that he feels comfortable around Nakamura in a way he doesn’t with everyone else. That conversation really hit for me because it shows two people quietly understanding each other without needing some huge dramatic moment. Hirose recognizing his own social limits and refusing to force himself into situations just for appearances felt very relatable. And for Nakamura, hearing Hirose open up gives him the confidence to finally believe he might actually matter to him. By the end of the trip, when Takeuchi tries pulling Hirose into another big group activity, Hirose clearly doesn’t want to go but starts following along anyway. Nakamura finally steps up and repeats Hirose’s own advice back to him: don’t force yourself to do things you don’t want to do. After spending the entire episode working up the courage, Nakamura finally asks Hirose to be his friend. Hirose has Mr. Otogiri take their picture together and reveals that he already considered Nakamura a friend long before this moment. I absolutely love how meaningful that confirmation becomes for Nakamura. After an entire episode of feeling invisible, he realizes Hirose really has been paying attention to him all along. And now that they’ve officially labeled their relationship as friendship, I’m excited to see what comes next for the two of them.
