The part everyone pictures — the pour itself — lasts about ten seconds. Everything on either side of it takes all night. Hours of heat coming up beforehand, and then hours of it going back down, and the whole job is really about being patient at both ends.
There is no dial anywhere in the building. The colour of the metal is the temperature, and reading it is something that takes twenty years to learn and cannot be written down. It comes down through the shades on its own schedule — red, then orange, then a dull grey that looks completely finished and will still take the skin off your hand.
The moulds are packed from fine black sand, damp with oil, holding their shape with nothing binding them. Pack them loose and the metal blows straight out; pack them right and every corner fills on its own. Then they sit in rows on the floor and nobody opens a single one before morning. Cool it fast and it cracks.
Down at the far cold end of the floor, exactly as far from the red as it is possible to get while still being indoors, a small black cat has worked out the arrangement precisely. Golden eyes half open, tail tucked in, watching the whole thing go grey.
Underneath it all the bass sits deep and analog, with an intimate baritone drifting over tight funk guitar and a dreamy Rhodes, warm tape hiss and a soft crackle of vinyl underneath. Ninety minutes of unhurried 70s grooves, built to stay in the background while you work.
