Why Your Scenes Don’t Flow (And How to Fix It)

You’ve cut strong individual scenes — but when you place them together on the timeline, the edit falls apart. The issue isn’t your scenes. It’s what happens between them. In this video, Paddy Bird explains Jump-Off Points — a rarely discussed structural editing technique used by professional editors to create narrative flow between scenes, sequences, and storylines. A jump-off point is the precise moment where one section of a film hands over to the next — not because it’s time to cut, but because the story demands it. These moments act as invisible narrative glue, preventing the subconscious rupture audiences feel when scenes don’t belong together. You’ll learn: • What jump-off points are and why they matter in long-form editing • How editors create flow between scenes without forcing transitions • The difference between stylistic cutting and structural justification • How dialog, visuals, and behavior can act as narrative springboards • Why intercutting only works when jump-off points are doing the heavy lifting This video breaks down pictorial, dialog-based, and structural jump-off points, with clear examples that show how professional editors move seamlessly between locations, timelines, and emotional states. If your edits feel disconnected, fragmented, or structurally weak — this is the missing concept. 0:00 Why your scenes don’t flow 0:57 The invisible glue that holds the edit together 2:25 What do jump off points look/sound like? 2:57 Real World Example: Pictorial 3:58 Real World Example: Dialogue 4:51 Periodic Table of Editing (Free Poster) 5:24 Real World Example: Intercutting 6:38 Real World Example: Scene endings 8:56 The Checklist: How to find a jump off point 9:45 Jump-Off Points as Narrative Architecture 10:50 When a Jump-Off Point Works 12;00 Final thought 🎁 Free Editing Poster → https://www.insidetheedit.com/free-ed... 📱 Download the App → https://apps.apple.com/us/app/inside-... 📰 Join Our Newsletter → https://www.insidetheedit.com/the-ins... 🌐 Visit Our Website → https://www.insidetheedit.com/?utm_so... #filmediting #editingtips #storytelling
