Using a pressure washer to dig fence post holes in clay or hard-packed soil is a legitimate technique that saves hours of manual digging — here's how to do it without making a muddy mess.

The pressure washer method: attach a soil lance (a long, narrow nozzle) to the pressure washer wand, and direct the stream downward into the soil to wash out a column of earth. This works exceptionally well in clay and compacted soil where an auger struggles. The downside: you create a slurry that needs to dry before you pour concrete — or you work in a dry cycle and let the hole drain.
📦 TOOLS USED:
→ Greenworks 2000 PSI 1.2 GPM Electric Pressure Washer: https://amzn.to/4fNI4np
→ IRWIN Level I-Beam 72-Inch: https://amzn.to/3qMOHym
→ Stanley FatMax Tape Measure 25 ft: https://amzn.to/3kgGJ02
Call 811 before digging — the pressure washer method goes down fast and the high-pressure stream can damage plastic gas or water lines if you hit them before you see them.
💡 PRO TIP: Let the hole drain and dry at least 4 hours before adding concrete — wet soil at the bottom of the hole dilutes the concrete mix and weakens the footing. Wait for the slurry to clear before pouring.
