In 1951, Durham County Council published a plan that sorted the county's villages into categories. Category D meant one thing: don't spend money here. No new houses, no new investment, and in the long run, no village. More than a hundred places ended up on that list. So what was it really like to live in one? In this video we step inside a 1960s County Durham pit village and follow the ordinary day: the pit buzzer before dawn, the range fire, the bait tin, the long walk underground, the tin bath, the Co-op divi, the leek show and the Durham Miners' Gala. Then we look at why the pits closed, where the council sent its money instead, and why so many families stayed anyway. Britain Off Map explores the hidden, forgotten and overlooked places of Britain, and the stories behind them.
