Today, I apologized all day — for a mistake that wasn't mine.
Someone on my team made a mistake with a client's order. I didn't even know about it until this morning.
So my boss and I went to apologize in person. Then another office. Then a phone call. Then another one.
In Japan, an apology like this usually comes with a box of sweets from a department store. We call it "kashiori."
And you say "moushiwake gozaimasen" — the most formal "I'm sorry."
I think I said it about thirty times today.
Here's the part that might sound strange.
Nobody asked, "Whose fault was it?" Not the client. Not my boss.
Here, a mistake doesn't really belong to one person. It belongs to the team.
Last year, I was the one who made the mistake. My boss came with me, and bowed first — lower than I did.
So maybe today was just my turn.
After a day like that, I needed something sweet.
Ramen, a soft-boiled egg, and — for the first time in a while — matcha annin tofu.
A little bitter. A little sweet. Kind of like today.
At your work, when someone makes a mistake — who apologizes? The person, or the team?
And has anyone ever taken the blame for you?
I'd really like to know.
