Goals in the English top flight, 1888-2025 Nearly every goal scored in the English top flight since the first league match on 8 September 1888, added up club by club, month by month. Aston Villa led from 1893 to 1974. Everton led from 1974 to 2023. Liverpool took the lead in 2023. Every figure in the bars and the right-hand column is recomputed from the source data at render time, never typed in. The lower band is written text: its dates and numbers, two match scores included, come from the chronicle's sources. That is why the leader changes only 11 times in 137 years. Months with no top-flight match are skipped: every summer break; the wartime suspensions of 1915-19 and 1939-46, when only regional leagues were played; and April-May 2020, during the Covid-19 suspension of the 2019-20 season. The three rounds played in August-September 1939, before the 1939-40 season was abandoned, are not in the source data. Promotions and relegations across the two wartime breaks are not computed: the previous recorded season is not the previous season. The chart shows each month's top 12 plus the next one (the league had only twelve clubs in its first two seasons). Every month runs at the same speed; each season's event in the lower band is held for as long as the season lasts. -------------------- THE RIGHT-HAND COLUMN LEAGUE TITLES counts the championships won before the season on screen, recomputed from the same match results with the points rules of each era (two points a win until 1981, three since), including seasons decided on goal average, goal difference and, in 1989, goals scored. PROMOTED IN EARLIER SEASONS and PROMOTED AND RELEGATED are read from the change of membership between consecutive recorded seasons. The Second Division only began in 1892-93: in 1890-91, 1891-92 and 1892-93 the clubs shown as promoted were elected to the League, and those shown as relegated had not been re-elected. -------------------- CHRONICLE One event per season, 126 in all, from the first points system to the Premier League era. Each carries at least two sources (295 in all) and a written counter-argument. An automatic check sent 125 of the 126 first drafts back (125 lacked a counter-argument, 77 rested on a single source); 84 were rewritten, the other 41 kept their wording and gained a counter-argument (26 also new sources); an independent adversarial reviewer then read each. Five went round again for a second review: four were corrected, one kept as written, its objection failing when the source was reopened; one of them went round a third time. The remaining account (2022) passed the check and was not reviewed in that round. A last review on 28 September 2026 read all 126 accounts, 2022 included, and rewrote 20 of them. Each account states the fact under its season; some say what followed (a relegation, all-seater grounds). The 1925 account concerns what the bars count: after the offside change, attacking play flourished at once, and its source records that season's rise in First Division goals.
